Contemporary Addition, Galston

Project Type: Alterations and Additions

The brief for this project was to provide additions to a period style home in a contrasting modern, contemporary style.

The existing house suffered from typical problems associated with the era; large bedrooms suitable for a bedroom wing, but disjointed kitchen and living spaces which were too small for modern day living. The design provides a new ‘wing’ to the house as living areas, with the proportions and roof angles reflecting the existing wing. The new wing incorporates a new entry, open plan living and kitchen, with a walk-in pantry and laundry. This solution enabled a better connection to the rural setting and character of the site, bringing the outdoors in, incorporating spectacular windows for maximum views to the surrounding treetops, and providing brilliant light penetration.
